Chabad in Moldova’s Small Communities
Alongside Moldova’s four largest Jewish communities — Chișinău, Bender, Tiraspol, and Bălți — there are 14 smaller and more remote Jewish communities throughout the country, in cities and towns that do not always have a rabbi, an active synagogue, or a permanent Jewish framework.
Chabad of Moldova works to ensure that the Jews in these communities remain connected to Jewish life, tradition, and the Jewish people. Throughout the year, Chabad emissaries travel across the country, visit the communities, lead prayers and farbrengens, celebrate the Jewish holidays together, and provide both material and spiritual support to families and elderly Jews.
This activity expands especially before the holidays. On Passover, public Seders are held even in remote communities, and shmurah matzah is distributed. On Chanukah, menorah lightings and celebrations take place. For Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays, the emissaries arrive with a shofar, prayer books, food, and holiday necessities.
For many Jews — especially in places without permanent Jewish institutions — these visits are far more than festive events. They are their connection to community, tradition, and Jewish identity.
Eighteen Jewish communities, large and small, are spread across Moldova — yet together they form one community.
