About Chabad Moldova and the Shluchim
1. What is Chabad Moldova, and what does it do?
Chabad Moldova is a nationwide network of Chabad centers, synagogues, educational programs and community and humanitarian services. We serve 18 communities, offering Jewish education, prayer, kosher food, Shabbat and holiday programs, and help for those in need. Our goal is for every Jew in Moldova to have a welcoming Jewish home.
2. Who are the Chabad shluchim in Moldova, and where do they serve?
Five shluchim families work together across the country:
• Rabbi Zushe and Chaya Abelsky — development and leadership of the Chabad Moldova network, institutional support and partnerships.
• Rabbi Menachem Mendel and Chaya Mushka Axelrod — the Chief Rabbinate, religious services, kashrut, education and community life in Kishinev and beyond.
• Rabbi Shmuel and Chaya Zalmanov — community programs in Kishinev, welcoming visitors, prayers and Torah classes. Rabbi Shmuel also founded 770 CHISINAU.
• Rabbi Menachem Mendel and Leah Gotsel — Chabad Bender–Tiraspol, prayer services, a soup kitchen, education and holiday programs.
• Rabbi Shneur Zalman and Chana Tiefenbrun — outreach to 14 smaller and remote communities, youth programs and nationwide projects.
They work with local staff and volunteers. Not everyone who calls themselves a Chabad shliach is authorized to represent the Chabad Moldova network. Only those listed on our official roster or expressly confirmed by our office may represent this network; this does not determine anyone’s standing outside our network.
3. Is there an active Jewish community in Moldova today?
Yes. Despite the Holocaust, decades of communist rule and emigration, Jewish life continues in Moldova. Kishinev is a major center, with communities in Bender, Tiraspol, Bălți and other towns. Chabad offers classes, prayer services, holiday celebrations and programs for all ages.
4. What services does Chabad Moldova offer residents and visitors?

We also provide food and essential assistance to vulnerable families, older adults and refugees, as well as practical information for visitors.
5. When did Chabad’s work in Moldova begin, and who founded it?
Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, of blessed memory, came with his wife Leah on the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s mission in 1989 to help rebuild Jewish life after decades of repression. The network took shape in 1989–1990. Rabbi Abelsky served as Chief Rabbi until his passing in 2014, and his work continues today.
6. How is Chabad Moldova organized, and which rabbis serve the community?
Chabad Moldova works through cooperation among the shluchim families, rabbis, institutional teams and local communities. Rabbi Zushe Abelsky serves as head shliach and chair of Chabad Moldova’s institutions, continuing his father’s work. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Axelrod serves as Chief Rabbi of Moldova and supports religious life, kashrut and education. Together they serve Jewish communities across the country.
