Every time there’s a Jewish holiday, Chabad of Moldova’s student division is on hand to cater to the many Israeli students who are studying at the university in Kishinev, strengthening their Jewish identity.
The new Chabad smicha program, Tomchei Temimim of Moldova, has been drawing a lot of attention boosting Jewish life and even warranted a local TV station’s interview with Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Abelsky, chief rabbi of Moldova. The smicha program is dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Zalman Tuvia Abelsky OB”M, shliach to Kishinev and head of Jewish life in Moldova for twenty-five years.
This year a group of rabbinical students have joined Chabad of Moldova. This young group is have been enthusiastic and eager to get Jewish Moldova thriving. Learning with community members, visiting people in nearby towns and coordinating community events have been just a few of things the students have done. Most recently, they put together a huge tefillin initiative, reaching out to the community and taking the campaign to the streets to get as many people as possible to laytefillin. A total of 7 karkaftas, people who never before laid tefillin, performed this holy mitzvah for the first time with the rabbinical students.
This past week, members from the Jewish community in Kishinev, gathered to attend a special concert at the Great Chabad Lubavitch Synagogue in Moldova. The concert was organized in honor of the new Jewish year, 5776, being a ‘Year of Hakhel’ – Jewish Unity.
Chabad of Moldova had the merit to lay Tefillin with seven Yidden who never had the chance previously in their life to put on Tefillin. The significance of laying Tefillin with what is called a ‘Karkafta’ is well known.
During Rosh Hashanah, hundreds of Jews attended services at Jewish Community Chabad synagogue in Kishinev, which is run under the leadership of Rabbi Yossef Abelsky, the country’s Chief Rabbi and head shliach.
(JTA) — Goldie Steinberg, reportedly the world’s oldest known Jewish person, died at age 114. Steinberg, according to Chabad.org, died Sunday at the Grandell Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Long Beach, New York. She was two months away from her 115th birthday. Throughout the month of Tishrei, yeshiva students Levi Abelsky, Mendy Maidanchick, and Yosef Levi put on tefillin with Jews throughout the city. Members of the Jewish community received pieces of the traditional lekach honey cake from head shliach Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Abelsky on Yom Kippur eve in accordance with the traditional custom also observed by his late father Rabbi Zalman Abelsky.
I would like to send my condolences to the Jewish communities in the country of Moldova following the passing of Chief Rabbi Zalman Tuvia Abelsky, of blessed memory. He was the survivor of his generation, a senior Chabad shliach who was sent to do his work by the Rebbe HaRayatz. He worked with singular dedication during some of the hardest times behind the Iron Curtain and he had the merit of restoring basic Jewish life to this country.
The first meeting between president of Moldova, Mr Nicolae Timofti, and new Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Abelsky took place, at the ceremony of the Moldovan Independence Day. Mr. Timofti found interest in life of the Jews in Moldova, and wished Rabbi Abelsky success in his new position of taking over his late father, Rabbi Zalman abelsky obm, as Chief Rabbi of Moldova.
