Kaddish in Dubossary: Chabad Emissary Rabbi Mendel Gotzel Honored the Memory of Thousands of Victims

On September 22, 2026, a memorial ceremony was held in Dubossar to mark 85 years since the mass executions of Jews in the city and surrounding area in September 1941.

Between September 12 and 28, 1941, thousands of Jewish men, women, children, and elderly people were murdered at mass graves on the outskirts of Dubossar. The memorial plaque states that more than 18,000 prisoners of the Dubossar Ghetto were killed there.

The ceremony brought together local authorities, diplomats, Chabad, Jewish community representatives, youth, and residents.

Among the participants were Ozias Ukshteyn, chairman of the Jewish Community of Dubossar, Shabatai Hanukhiev, vice-chairman of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, and Rabbi Mendel Gotzel, Chief Rabbi and Head Shliach of Chabad Bender and Tiraspol, who represented Chabad, addressed the gathering, and recited Kaddish in memory of the victims.

The memorial complex was extensively renovated last year with the support of local authorities and the Jewish Community of Moldova, helping preserve this important place of remembrance for future generations.

May the memory of the victims of the Holocaust be blessed.
